It’s a "She"

I’ve always been fascinated by anything that’s Japanese; the food, the culture, the humor, their history, architecture, the sword, the armor, the tattoos and more.

I am specially fascinated by the Hannya. Be it in a form of a tattoo or a mask.

It is said that the frightening Hannya mask portrays the souls of characters who have gone mad from jealousy.

In the Tale of Genji the story goes: “The shining Genji’s wife, Aoi, is possessed by an evil spirit and confined to her sickbed. An itinerant mountain priest is summoned, and while he is offering incantations and prayers, the protagonist, the spirit of the shining Genji’s old girlfriend, the Rokujo lady, who is jealous of his affection for Aoi, manifests. The priest wages a bitter spiritual battle with the Rokujo lady, and at last the revengeful ghost is vanquished by his prayers and attains Buddhahood. It is noteworthy that the evil spirit never takes off the hannya mask throughout her transformation into a Buddha. The Rokujo lady is still disturbed, but in the releasing of her madness she discovers a path to salvation, thus demonstrating that madness and sanity, suffering and salvation, are not unrelated to each other”.

As you might already know, I also am fascinated by motorcycles and things that are associated with it.

I found a helmet inspired by the Hannya and is called “Black Ghost”.

Here’s putting the best of both worlds together:

I gotta have one. 😉

Went there on Day 2. Shot lots of photos, missed a lot of good photo ops, got freebies, spoke with a lot of interesting people, saw bad ass bikes and cars, left before the bikini open and can’t upload photos because my internet sucks.

What you need to get in.

Letters, Ink and Ambigrams

I have always been amazed by ambigrams.

I even wanted a tattoo inked in this unique form of art. So I seeked a little help to bring to life the tattoo design I had in mind and this is the result:

Anak - Ama - Guro

It spells, “anak-ama-guro” (son, father, teacher) both ways (upside down or right side up).

I consulted with a tattoo artist (from Chris Garcia Tattoos) and asked if it would look okay to ink it on my chest like it was curving from the left shoulder to the right – like it was necklaced on me (I’m not very articulate right now, so forgive me if I can’t describe it clearly).

He said it’s ok and added that normally, ambigrams are best placed on the forearms for best effect.

We then agreed on a price and I was sincerely considering having it done right away. I didn’t want to have it done right there (I visited their booth at a tattoo convention) amidst the hullabaloo, so I opted to have it done in their shop somewhere in Project 6, Quezon City one weekend.

I was also considering this design:

Pinoy - Pride

But after some thought, I sort’a didn’t want it.

Because what I really want is to expand my existing tattoo to my left chest and back. But I still haven’t finished the design. 😦
