Cruise-Ween (Halloween Cruise Night)

 

October 29, Friday; I received an invitation from a fellow rider informing me of a pre-Halloween Ride around the city.

The Plan was simple enough. Meet up at Burger King, in Timog ave. I only have one problem, though; I haven’t tried riding through EDSA. There was no faster route to get to the rendezvous point, so I felt like I was either going to risk it, or I can pass on this opportunity.

Lucky me, another rider is coming from the south, so I met up with him first and we rode through Saturday EDSA traffic.

We were to meet at a coffee shop in The Fort and ride together. I got there at 5:30PM like I told him. He said he’d be in by 6, but due to a parade and a long traffic jam, he got there at 6:25. He rumbled along on his Honda 1100cc Shadow – Big and beautiful, if you ask me.

We chatted a little and then made our way through (what I thought was) the long stretch of EDSA. It looked pretty far in the map, but it wasn’t. We even made it there before the assigned meet-up time.

I learned something important when we finally got to Timog Ave. It was hot as noon on EDSA – even at night.

When we got there, I met four more brothers-on-2-wheels. Their iron horses were a sight to behold. But my Marishka stood proudly alongside the others, and these brothers were not indifferent of her. Truth be told, they actually liked her. The concept, the styling, the smooth lines – we were unconditionally accepted.

As the hour passed, 3 more came. We waited a little longer for the others who might still come, exchanging stories, joking around and just talking motorcycle. When we’ve decided that we were hungry and the others can always just meet us, we then rode off to our destination somewhere in Binondo, Manila for some late night, all-you-can-eat dim sum and hotpot.

We rode through Timog Ave. to Quezon Ave.  and saw a parade of ghouls, witches, zombies and other creatures of the night. They were waving and cheering us on as our machines stampeded through light traffic.

It was a good 15 to 20 minutes before we reached our destination.

Food was served after a few minutes, and man, I’m telling you, it was a feast!

I think my favorite would be the thinly-sliced beef, followed by the dumplings, cheese balls, broccoli, lobster balls and the golden mushrooms.

When it felt like I couldn’t take no more (we had to smoke outside to prep ourselves for rounds 2 and 3), I joined the smokers outside for a final stick of cigarette and we then paid our bill. We rode a short distance to swing by a fellow rider’s coffee shop to have a few cups of brews, but we came late. He had called it a night and closed shop.

The group decided to do the same, so we said our goodbyes and thanked each other for a good gathering. I rode through Osmeña highway with two new friends. One rode through SLEX while the other rode with me until the intersection of Sen. Gil Puyat and Don Chino Roces. I waved goodbye and sped on home.

Marishka’s odometer clocked a good 47.1 kilometers for the entire ride. Not bad for her first city ride; A break away from the usual home-office-home ride.

Lane splitting through EDSA, blasting through Osmeña highway and meeting the Cruiser Boys for the first time was not at all bad.
